Please specify which crufty config.

I am running on feisty, and the following:

    dpkg --force-depends --purge fontconfig-config
    rm -rf /etc/fonts
    apt-get -f install fontconfig-config
    rm -rf $HOME/.font*

did not fix the problem for me.
