from your description it looks like that the "Switch User" didn't bring
you to the gdm login dialog but to the gnome-screensaver unlock dialog,
can you confirm that? Could you try to run "gdmflexiserver --startnew"
from a command line and note to a comment if it works and what it's
printing?
