If you upgraded using the dist-upgrader mechanism, could you please attach the files from /var/log/dist-upgrade/* to this bugreport? I agree with seb that it is most likely a theme issue, try setting System/Preferences/Theme to e.g. "Human". -- gnome menus are near invisible (edgy) https://launchpad.net/bugs/59263
