[Bug 58643] the non-x terminal is not readable

Public bug reported:

I have just upgraded form dapper.  I have previously run from warty on
this machine without this problem.

Non-x terminals have a large number of vertical, dashed white lines
regularly spread running down them which makes them unusable.
