[Bug 66753] Laptop Freezes Rigt Before GDM Startup

I have a Dell laptop with an Intel 845 graphics chipset. The bootup has been insconsistent, in that usually it succeeded in less than 3 attempts. When it failed, it booted all the way to X startup with no problems. The X.org wait cursor appears and spins for a second, then stops. After another second, it goes away so screen is black. Then screen will blink, but stay black. Finally, the laptop freezes. Powering off is the only option. Now, this happens every time. However, I just noticed that sometimes I don't get the X cursor. So, maybe it's not GDM that causes the freeze.
This laptop is a sweet Celeron 2.4ghz. It is an upgrade from Dapper. It was working yesterday (2006/10/17).
I'm using kernel 2.6.17-10-generic.
I just tried booting using the 2.6.17-10-386 kernel and it finally came up again.
I'm happy to provide other info. Below is what I thought of at this moment.
