thanks for all the info, I think i'm getting close to a solution... I
remember now that after some kernel updates my network card doesn't come
back from hibernation so i've put its drivers (via-rhine) on the modules
file and it fixed it. maybe that is the problem, the network is not up
when gdm starts.

I don't use neither NFS nor NIS and i'm using ubuntu edgy i386. no
/var/crash about gdm. An I'm rebooting now to see what info I get from
gdm with debug on.
