The gdm.conf has a "GraphicalTheme=Human" which seems to be correct. Do you have anything to /var/log/syslog about that? Could you try with the Debug key set from gdmsetup? -- GDM sets to gnome defaults rather than Edgys https://launchpad.net/bugs/66127
