[Bug 71687] Issuing sudo /etc/init.d/gdm stop causing system to hang

I'll post my reply, and if Stephen gets similar results, perhaps we can mark
this as a duplicate of Bug 67440.

1. Does using ctrl-alt-F1 to switch to VT works

Sort of. When I initially kill KDM, I see the Kubuntu splash screen on VT7
from usplash. Hitting C-A-F1 just gives me a blank screen, but the VT does
work (I can issue commands like /etc/init.d/kdm restart). I just can't see
anything, so I have to type carefully.

2. Do you have any useful information to /var/log/messages or
/var/log/syslog?

Hmmm, haven't checked. I'll do that after this reply.

3. Does it happen if you log out of the desktop normally and not by stopping
gdm?

No, it's only when I kill KDM.
