It turned out to be a bug in my code after all, which I couldn't find at
first with valgrind (it generates so many false alarms I can never find
the real bugs among them), but it turned up with MALLOC_CHECK_ and some
experimentation.

Sorry for the bogus report. I can't seem to find a way to close it.
