With Edgy Eft I was able to produce the exact same error.

I wrote a quick and dirty script to solve the problem for me until it is
fixed:

#!/bin/sh

killall xcompmgr
gnome-session-save --kill


I removed the shutdown button from the panel, and added this script. I changed the icon to the shutdown icon so it looks just like it.
