I think this patch might do the trick. I tried hacking /usr/lib/hal /hald-probe-volume and hald-probe-storage and setting VIA_SIGNATURE to 0x55ab instead of 0x55aa. gnome-volume-manager now mounts the iPod Nano as expected. -- New iPod nano recognized as via raid member https://launchpad.net/bugs/66068
