I'm not running very fast here... 500 Mhz PIII, but that should be fine, especially considering VLS and XMMS don't have any trouble, and it's not used much while the problem is happening.
The CD drive is an XM-6602B at 40x, so that should be more than enough.  If it can rip at 1.3x or higher, it should be able to play at 1.0x.
I can't seem to fine "gnome-cd" anywhere...
