ubuntu-desktop depends on gnome-themes. So for most users, this is not a
problem.

Also, I don't really understand because I think that metathemes are
already part of gnome-themes, not ubuntu-artwork :

 dpkg -S /usr/share/themes/Traditional
gnome-themes: /usr/share/themes/Traditional

(for example)

So I believe that this is not a bug but the fact that those themes are
not correctly removed.

Could you please provide the output of :

dpkg -S /usr/share/themes/$THEME  where $THEME is a non-working theme
that you have normally removed ?
