To answer your question:

I just tested it, and yes, gedit and eog also have poor print
resolution. Onscreen everything looks OK, but printer output looks like
60 DPI.

Your question got me curious about what kedit would do, so I tried that.
It  printed beautifully (as all the KDE tools seem to).
