Please test your different card configs using aplay:
1) Change the default sound card using System> Preferences> Sound>
Default sound card
2) Open a Terminal, then: aplay /usr/share/sounds/startup.wav
This should play from the default sound card you just set.
3) Repeat steps 1 & 2 for a different sound card.
If aplay plays correctly from the different default cards, then the
applications (totem, vlc, mplayer, rhythmbox) are to blame.
If aplay does /not/ play them correctly, please note that in a response
in this bug report. We will need the contents of ~/.asoundrc.asoundconf
each time after you set a (new) default sound card, the output from
``amixer'' (per-default card), and the contents of /proc/asound/cards
(only once).
Thanks,
