I tossed my suggested solution upstream and even attached a mock-up which I will attach here also.  Please give me feedback on what you think about the idea.

As I do not have time to sit down and code a patch myself, I am hoping somebody else will implement this.  I just hope it gets the attention of the gnome devs so we can get unmounted media out of the sidebar.
