Public bug reported:

Affects: gnome-media (Ubuntu)
       Severity: Wishlist
       Priority: (none set)
         Status: Unconfirmed

Description:
Currently when a USB sound device (e.g., USB headset) is plugged in, a
hint window appears in the bottom right that has a button to launch
gnome-sound-properties.

I believe that most of the time in such a case you want to set the new
device as the default, just like with normal headphones -- the speakers
are muted the moment you plug the headphones in.

As far as I know, at least Windows and OpenSolaris immediately switch
the default device, no questions asked. I would suggest that Ubuntu
should do the same thing. At the very least, please make it easier to
set the new default: instead of the button that launches gnome-sound-
properties place a button "Make the new device default" or something
like that, so that there is no need to go through an extra dialog. It
might make sense to make this configurable, for the few people who may
not want this behaviour.

** Changed in: gnome-media (Ubuntu)
     Severity: Normal => Wishlist
