Comment:
I manually created /etc/gdm/gdm.conf-custom as:

[daemon]
RemoteGreeter=/usr/lib/gdm/gdmgreeter

[xdmcp]
Enable=true

Then I restarted gdm. Now remote logins work properly. What's more, gdmsetup now shows the Remote style as 'Same as Local.' On a whim, I tried disabling remote logins through gdmsetup. It had no effect, and the gdm.conf-custom file was unchanged.

Then I tried removing gdm.conf-custom so that remote logins would be disabled again. gdmsetup still shows remote logins as enabled. Somehow gdmsetup is able to find out the current settings gdm is using and not the settings stored in the configuration file.
