I had similar problems. The workaround was as follows (thanks for the hint):

cp /etc/denemo.keymaprc/english.keymaprc ~/.denemo/keymaprc

The original file in ~/.denemo/keymaprc had empty keybindings. 

In addition one might want to copy the denemo.conf file to the user's ~/.denemo file as follows:

cp /etc/denemo.conf denemorc

Then a warning printed by denemo is eliminated.
