Should this bug be really considered fixed? I mean there have been many
duplicates of this bug recently and I think the new reporters experience
this bug in the new 'fixed' package version.

I would say that we should revert that mentioned last-moment change or
implement possibility to use .hidden file for non-file objects on
Desktop.
