Public bug reported:
https://launchpad.net/malone/bugs/34818

Affects: esound (Ubuntu)
       Severity: Normal
       Priority: (none set)
         Status: Unconfirmed

Description:
Shipping with esd enabled by default causes a lot of problems with
applications which aren't esd-aware.

Doing software-level sound mixing with esd is no longer needed since alsa provides the same functionnality through the dmix plugin (
http://alsa.opensrc.org/index.php?page=DmixPlugin) which is enabled by default by alsa if the sound device doesn't support hardware mixing.

esd also causes annoying problems, like the one described in LP bug
21915 or the one described in GNOME bugzilla bug 330586.

Another solution would be to make esd spawn after each connection, so it
wouldn't stay running idle for 5s like it currently does. It would
prevent it from blocking the device.
