Ah, right, I remember that breezy's hal did not automatically mount
drives with an invalid label (this has been fixed in Dapper). However,
the device should at least be present in hal. So I'm a bit puzzled
indeed and wonder why it does see the drive, but not the partition. Can
you please do the procedure again, and additionally send me the output
of

  ls -l /dev/sd*
  id hal
