My solution was just to get rid of the symlinks entirely, and blame the
problem on software not allowing a "sensible" choice of which DVD drive
you wanted to watch.

(ie. like Serpentine/etc. give you a "human" list of devices, rather
than relying on an arbitrary symlink)
