I can confirm this bug on my iMac G5 17inch system.

I have read elsewhere that it is related to the sound on iMacs. I have
successfully installed Linux on this machine only with installations
that allowed me to disable the sound before it was tried. Those other
reports also noted that this is likely since the Gnome login screen
makes a sound just as it loads up.

I was able to Ctrl-Alt-F1 just before the login screen loaded up. The
terminal froze too, and I was presented with the following timeout
errors every 30 seconds or so:
