I can't reproduce the problem here (dapper abiword 2.4.2-0ubuntu1 ). Is
your abiword up to date?

If you shutdown all the abiword windows and
mv ~/.AbiSuite/ ~/.AbiSuite.bak
Then start abiword, untick the splash screen preference then start abiword again is it any better?
