I have this bug too. It's exactly as described above. I've used every version of Ubuntu since Warty, always upgrading the distribution. Stopping DBUS immediately made trash-applet work. Starting DBUS did not make the trash empty again. -- Trash always empty. https://launchpad.net/bugs/34247
