I've encountered this problem with a Samsung ML-1210 on a parallel port (/dev/lp0) from a fresh install of dapper. It seems others have too:

In my case the solution has been to run:
sudo lpadmin -p ML-1210 -v parallel:/dev/lp0
but it would be good to get this fixed.
