ok. then we have found the problem. If you do a 'sudo ifup lo' it should
come up and you should be able to log into gnome with no problems
anymore.

So this is NOT a bug in gnome-desktop, but somewhere else.

could you please attach a copy of your /etc/network/interfaces please?
