are you using gnome?
with my external usb drives (maxtor 150go, mp3 MuVo 4g0, sony dscl1 camera)
As mgut said, It is easy to umount them by just right clicking --> Démonter le volume (yes i'm french)

So i don't really understand your request.
if you are a gnome user please close your request by settinf stauts to rejected and severity to wishlist
