Your "Device Manager gets stuff wrong" sounds like a different bug to this. You will probably want to find a bug that better fits what you are seeing or if no such bug exists, open a new one.

I know this sounds strange but could you wait for two minutes after starting Device Manager? On my system it takes a while for it to fill all the data in and in the meantime it sits there with nothing but a while and grey pane...

You can also try to run lshal from the command line to see whether that
generates an error (don't copy the output here though!)
