Comment:
Thanks or the reply, Martin.

The behavior has changed recently, possibly due to the latest updates
(in both breezy and dapper flight 4). Now what happens is that once I
put the floppy in the disk drive, it takes about 2 minutes (!) for the
green light to turn off, but after that, it mounts and opens up a window
in the file manager, displaying all the files on the drive.

When I unmount it, by right-clicking on the icon in the file manager, it
unmounts nice and fast but displays an error: Unable to eject media.
This makes sense because the floppy drive does not support autoejecting.
Remounting it again causes it to take about another 2 minutes, but
evenutally it opens a window and functions properly.

Here is the output you requested:

dane at TopHat:~$ cat /etc/mtab
/dev/hda1 / ext3 rw,errors=remount-ro 0 0
proc /proc proc rw 0 0
sysfs /sys sysfs rw 0 0
devpts /dev/pts devpts rw,gid=5,mode=620 0 0
tmpfs /dev/shm tmpfs rw,noexec,nosuid,nodev 0 0
usbfs /proc/bus/usb usbfs rw 0 0
tmpfs /lib/modules/2.6.12-10-686/volatile tmpfs rw,mode=0755 0 0
shm /dev/shm tmpfs rw,noexec,nosuid,nodev 0 0
tmpfs /dev tmpfs rw,size=10M,mode=0755 0 0
/dev/sda /media/floppy vfat rw,nosuid,nodev,quiet,shortname=winnt,uid=1002,gid=1002,umask=077,iocharset=utf8 0 0

dane at TopHat:~$ ls -l /etc/mtab
-rw-r--r-- 1 root root 482 2006-02-20 12:08 /etc/mtab

Hope this helps.
