I'm confident that's fixed with dapper since upstream says so and it works fine for me. If you want to try a patched package, the steps to build one are:
- apt-get source package
- cd package-...
- patch -p0 < patch
- sudo apt-get build-dep package
- debuild

you may need to install devscripts, make, patch too
