Thanks for the replies.

To find out which backend you are using, open Totem, go to Help | About
and it should be listed under the Totem version number.

To install totem-xine, open System | Administration | Synaptic Package
Manager, search for 'totem-xine', mark it for installation by right-
clicking the totem-xine package and then click the Apply button. This
will install totem-xine, which will just be called 'Movie Player' or
'Totem' in the Applications menu. Then try to play a DVD using it!
