I think hiding the volumes on desktop is indeed the default (happened to
me as well). That's just an /apps/nautilus/desktop GConf key to set to
"true" by default.

One reason why we should let these icons appear on the desktop is
unmounting. You can't unmount volumes from the "Places" menu, so hiding
the desktop icons would imply adding the disk-mounter applet in the
default panel layout. I think showing them on the desktop is a better
option.

Another reason is that users plugging some device in their computer will
probably wait for something to happen, and may not want to look into the
Places menu to see that.
