I was more after the 45MB of disk space as my disk is full and I was
looking for low-hanging disk-space to cull!

With an emptied the disk cache:

$ time cat %gconf-tree.xml > /dev/null
real    0m0.985s  user    0m0.008s  sys     0m0.013s
$ time gunzip -cd %gconf-tree.xml.gz > /dev/null
real    0m0.131s  user    0m0.054s  sys     0m0.003s
