Can you please download
http://people.ubuntu.com/~pitti/scripts/cdcaps.py and then do

  python cdcaps.py /dev/hdc

once when the (empty) drive behaves normally, and once when it is in
'ghost' mode?

Please copy&paste the output here in both cases.
