If totem is using Xine as its backend, then this is probably the same
problem I am having with Kaffeine and Xine.

I have an OGM contained video with a subtile in vobsub format. Xine crashes with:
xiTK received SIGSEGV signal, RIP.

The kaffeine backtrace is attached.

Kaffeine and Xine work if the vobsub files are not loaded.

Mplayer works, though.
