Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: esound

Hi there,
This seems to be happening to me more and more. I start up my computer from a cold boot and log into Gnome. Sound appears to work (i.e. the login sound goes off and xmms works). However applications that use OSS (like Cedega) complain about OSS not working properly.

What I have noticed is that esd is spawned multiple times. Here is a "ps -elf | grep esd" output:
0 S mwp 5440 1 0 76 0 - 771 - 10:25 ? 00:00:00 /usr/bin/esd -terminate -nobeeps -as 1 -spawnfd 18
0 S mwp 5442 1 0 76 0 - 1506 - 10:25 ? 00:00:00 /usr/bin/esd -nobeeps
1 S mwp 5446 1 0 75 0 - 736 - 10:25 ? 00:00:00 /usr/bin/esd -terminate -nobeeps -as 1 -spawnfd 18

Sometimes I have noticed that the spawnfd is 18 and 18... other times
its 18 and 17. Either way when this happens OSS does not work.

To troubleshoot further I have used XMMS. XMMS allows me to specify an
output via a plugin. The ALSA plugin and the eSound plugin both work,
however the OSS plugin does not.

Everytime this happens if I exit gnome, kill all my processes, and log
in again, it fixes the problem.

Please let me know if you need any further information.
