Daniel, in fact, you must have been right. I had 2.6.15-20 installed but after an upgrade to 2.6.15-21 the suspension just started working.
However, I should rather say "working". I can get back to X but the desktop itself then becomes useless. Whenever I try to select something with a mouse or to scroll, everything gets messy as a part of one text overlays a part of another and so on. I am not sure of how can I backtrace why it is so.
