Public bug reported:

Affects: totem (Ubuntu)
       Severity: Normal
       Priority: (none set)
         Status: Unconfirmed

Description:
When you open totem-xine 1.4.0-0ubuntu2 without a media file, it crashes
immediately with the following stderr output:

"""
The program 'totem' received an X Window System error.
This probably reflects a bug in the program.
The error was 'BadAlloc (insufficient resources for operation)'.
  (Details: serial 72 error_code 11 request_code 141 minor_code 19)
  (Note to programmers: normally, X errors are reported asynchronously;
that is, you will receive the error a while after causing it.
To debug your program, run it with the --sync command line
option to change this behavior. You can then get a meaningful
backtrace from your debugger if you break on the gdk_x_error() function.)
"""

This is consistenly reproducible.

The environment: latest dapper repos libxine and libxine-extracodecs
plus other library dependencies that would be installed by the whole
gstreamer0.10 plugin set and the libdvdcss2 binary packages found at
videolan.org. Please notice that libxvidcore4 was updated almost at the
same time than totem in the repositories, that could be a source of the
problem. On the other hand, totem-gstreamer and gxine work fine.
