However, that's still just as unhelpful to the end user. For all I know, you could expect users to make $120k a year, and it'd have about the same effect on their compilations. Package is supposed to allow users to compile Gnome applications, it doesn't, ergo it's a packaging bug. I don't see how any amount of arguing on principles is going to change anything here.
