Thanks for your bug report. Which version of Ubuntu and gnome-netstatus do you use? Is this reproducible? If so, could you 
 * remove it from the panel
 * run /usr/lib/gnome-netstatus/gnome-netstatus-applet in a terminal
 * add it to the panel
 * kill panel again
 * and look for output in the terminal?
