Hmm, it works...
Either it was fixed somewhere else, or the circumstance to reproduce are more specific than I thought. I'm sure it did fail, though. 

With "fully modal" I meant that it was always in front, so another window (even a firefox or xterm window) was placed behind it. I didn't check the metacity "On Top" setting btw, should do that next time.
