I understand your point, Petr, but using the same gradient everywhere would make the desktop look extremely boring. "If you've seen one gradient, you've seen them all" is hardly something you wait to aim at.

If you make a theme that's utterly boring to look at, people will want to switch to another theme. Instead, ubuntulooks tries to keep the look interesting by defining semi-unique styles for different kind of UI components, without seriously breaking consistency. 

Still, I'm open minded, so if you can convince me that I'm wrong, and Mark backs you up, then I'll make the change.
