Thanks for your bug. It was already reported upstream:
http://bugs.gnome.org/show_bug.cgi?id=121883

As long as upstream is working on this (and they, too, suggested the scrollbar),
you can workaround this by holding the alt key and moving with the left mouse
key and resizing with the middle mouse key.
