After upgrading I saw no difference. The behavior was the same.

If I stop pbbuttonsd there is some difference. When headphones are unplugged the
volume control icon on the panel has no effect but the volume keys work right.
If I have headphones plugged it in seems to mostly work the way I would expect
except the volume up key doesn't work. But the volume applet and the other
volume keys work right.
