I'm wondering if the same problem would happen in the machine hosting the SMB
share was shut down.  If so, this becomes less of a corner case.

Probably the bug isn't with GNOME, but with whatever component of the OS handles
the smbfs mount, since 'ls -l' exhibits similar hangs when trying to list the
broken mount point.
