I've done a few updates and still experience the crash but have narrowed it down
to one particular song (referenced in #3). The XML I included below.  I did the
following:

1) removed the XML fragment for the track completely - rhythmbox loads
2) used music -> import track... to import it from it's existing location -
rhythmbox crashes
3) restart rhythmbox - crash
4) move track from current location to desktop and start rhymthbox - rhythmbox loads
5) used music -> import track... to import it from desktop - rhythmbox crashes

This track plays without problems in Totem. If someone would like the track to
debug with I can email it to them.
