This happens only when the Composite extension is enabled and working, the
variable mentioned by the poster disables ARGB variables for programs which see
it.  The variable could safely be added to the firfox (and other browsers)
startup script, or it could just be documented that Composite is a bad idea for now.

There is a redhat bug regarding the same issue here:

There is also a thread on gnome.org from Sept 04 regarding it here:

which suggests that this problem will exist for many programs when Composite is
turned on.
