Just to confirm, did you enter the "ls" command in your home directory? I forgot
to give you an absolute path, so this naturally fails when you call it from a
different directory.

Can you please check again with

  ls ~/.gconf/desktop/gnome/gnome-volume-manager

? It's a bit too late now I guess since you already changed the parameter
manually now (in System -> Settings -> Removable Devices, I assume). But this is
the only solution I could imagine, otherwise I am really puzzled. I does not
happen on a clean preview install, and neither on a hoary -> breezy upgrade.
